The steel pan (often called steel drum) was invented in Trinidad in the 1940s. Some of its history and evolution are documented in these two YouTube videos (1956 documentary and 2004 documentary). Trinidadians always call it steel pan or pan rather than steel drum. It is the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago.
